Organizing for the End of the School Year: The Expedition Into the Deep, Dark Abyss of the Backpack

Ah, the end of the school year is upon us! It's that glorious time when students can finally bid farewell to homework, exams, and the daily hustle and bustle of the classroom. But before you sprint towards the freedom of summer break, there's one task you simply can't ignore. Yes, it's time to embark on the great adventure of cleaning out backpacks and putting away all the remnants of another academic journey.

As you approach the backpack, you can't help but feel a sense of trepidation. Who knows what kind of surprises await you in its murky depths? Perhaps you'll stumble upon a long-lost homework assignment or the remaining 2 pencils out of the 40 that you started with at the beginning of the year. Take a deep breath, summon your courage, and prepare for the first step of the journey: the great unzipping.

As you begin your excavation, you encounter an assortment of miscellaneous items that defy explanation. Something like the aforementioned pencil or perhaps a pocket full of smashed up orange goldfish crackers. How long have they been there? Grab your garbage and recycling bin and sort out the recyclable paper from the trash paper. Throw out the erasers jammed with pencil points. Throw out notebooks that are past the point of no return. Salvage what is left of the markers, glue sticks, scissors, calculators, headphones, etc. Set aside a container for these supplies so you can take inventory for the next school year. Sorry to those of you with children still in elementary school, you will probably have to buy all new supplies since they are shared amongst the students. The kids are on their own though once they get into middle school and high school so you can reuse supplies from year to year. After the bag is cleared out, turn it over and give it a good shake and then throw it in the washing machine for a scrub. It is scary to think of where these bags have been throughout the year.

Organizing for the end of the school year may be a daunting task, but it's also an opportunity to reflect on the journey that has led you to this point. Embrace the absurdity, celebrate the forgotten, and relish in the triumph of tidiness. So, go forth and conquer that backpack! Remember, the next school year awaits with open arms and a fresh supply of pens ready to be lost in the abyss once again.
